“Nest of Serpents” was the meaning of the word “Cancún,” but the name of one of Mexico’s most iconic cities may have other meanings. In fact, “Place of the Four Lagoons” was recently mentioned as its true meaning. This was the result of a study conducted by a civil organization with the help of Mayan linguistics specialists.
The profound meaning of the word Cancún goes beyond one. First, let’s mention the most well-known of all:
Nest of snakes
It derives from the Mayan “KAAN – K’UU.” This meaning is the most accepted by visitors and locals. Related to this, a curious fact is that there are approximately 50 species of snakes in Quintana Roo, and although these animals are not to everyone’s liking, only three of them pose a risk to humans. Furthermore, most are found in the Mayan zone. Raúl Pavón Abreu, the city’s first chronicler, stated that the Mayans considered this animal a deity, which could explain its name, “Cancún.”
Place of the Golden Serpent
It derives from the word “KAANK’ UN” and is one of the most convincing proposals for many. This contribution was made by Juan Ramón Bastarrachea, an anthropologist and Mayan language specialist. Gold may have many more explanations, such as the incredible sunrise and sunset that can be seen in the city are similar to the color and shine of gold.
Cancún hides many secrets and fascinating stories related to the mystical pre-Hispanic Mayan culture, which settled in the area hundreds of years ago. Today, their legacy is evident in every word of the Mayan language, in every tradition, and in every custom of its inhabitants.
