Outside of Cancún’s tourist zone, as in the rest of Mexico, you won’t go broke. In this area, everything is priced at tourist prices, and it’s easy to waste money. It takes a lot of effort not to spend too much in this part of the city.
Eat street food: street vendors are on this line. The streets of Mexico are safe and offer the cheapest and tastiest food in the area. If you don’t want to eat there, look for restaurants that cater to locals. If you start eating tourist food, you’ll pay triple what you should!
– Off-season travel: Try to visit Cancun during the low season, between June and November, as accommodations are considerably reduced.
Use public transportation: Taxis can be expensive; instead, try using buses to visit the many attractions in the hotel zone or downtown. Always remember to use buses marked R-1, R-2, or R1-2. These only cost 15 pesos, which is a little less than a dollar, but as a tip, always pay in pesos because they don’t give change.
Buy biodegradable sunscreen before your trip. If you plan to do anything in the ocean , be sure to bring biodegradable sunscreen before your trip. Snorkel guides sometimes don’t tell you until the last minute that regular sunscreen isn’t allowed (which damages the corals and overall water quality).
Water filter: Since tap water isn’t safe to drink and disposable plastic is harmful to the environment, carry a water filter with you. LifeStraw makes reusable bottles with built-in filters so you can rest assured that your water will always be clean and safe.
Start enjoying Cancun while saving on tips or keeping your family budget under control. There’s no excuse not to enjoy the Caribbean anymore!
